Dr. Tom H. Prettyman
Los Alamos National Laboratory
Los Alamos, NM
Thomas H. Prettyman earned a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina
State University (NCSU) in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from NCSU
in 1991. Upon completing his dissertation, he joined the Center for
Engineering Applications of Radioisotopes at NCSU as a Research Associate.
While at NCSU, he developed methods to image the composition of industrial
samples using a combination of computerized tomography and Compton-scatter
imaging. He also developed computational methods for modeling radiation-based
logging tools used in oil exploration. In 1992, he joined Los Alamos
National Laboratory as a Post Doctoral Research Associate, and in 1993
he became a Technical Staff Member. From 1993 to 2000, he worked in the
Safeguards Science and Technology group (NIS-5) and was actively involved
in the development of instrumentation and methods for nuclear material
nondestructive assay, including gamma ray assay methods based on
computerized tomography. In November of 2000, Dr. Prettyman transferred
to the Space and Atmospheric Science group at Los Alamos (NIS-1).
He is presently developing radiation detectors for nuclear material
nonproliferation and planetary science using wide
band gap semiconductors such as CdZnTe. As a member of the Lunar Prospector
team, he responsible for the development of instrument response models
for the gamma ray and neutron spectrometers. Dr. Prettyman has over 50
publications on instrumentation and methods for radiation detection and
nondestructive assay. He is a member of Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, ANS, and
IEEE. He has also served as an adjunct professor of nuclear engineering at
NCSU.
