Dr. Olivier Gasnault
Los Alamos National Laboratory
Los Alamos, NM
Dr. Olivier Gasnault is a French Post-Doc Research
Associate on the Lunar Prospector team. He studied mathematics, physics
and astronomy at the scientific university of Toulouse, France: Université
Paul Sabatier. As a graduate student, he did research on the measurement
of planetary surface composition using gamma-ray and neutron spectrometers.
For this purpose, he ran many numerical simulations with the code GEANT
provided by CERN (Switzerland). He applied his work to the calculation
of the efficiencies of the Mars Surveyor 2001 Ge gamma-ray detector.
He also made calculations of the fast neutron flux
leaking from the Moon and reproduced correctly the first measurements of
fast neutrons over the Moon by Lunar Prospector.
Dr. Olivier Gasnault passed his Ph.D on the 9th of November 1999 with
the specialty of planetology. Now he works at the Los Alamos National Laboratory
on the Lunar Prospector team and helps in various areas of data analysis
and reduction:
-
Numerical simulations of the fast neutron flux to extract as much information
as possible from this energy range;
-
Numerical simulations of the lower energy neutrons to understand the link
between the production and the leakage flux;
-
Calculation of the neutron production for a model of gamma-ray
production and emission;
-
Statistical analysis of various data sets using the principal component
analysis;
-
Studies of the relations between Th abundances and geological features.
Dr. Olivier Gasnault also continues to work on the preparation of the data
analysis for the Mars Surveyor 2001 Gamma-Ray Spectrometer.
